How Much Gratuity for Wedding Vendors

The best gratuity for any wedding vendor is a good review! However if you believe your vendors went above and beyond, here is a cheat sheet to tipping your wedding vendors.

Expected Gratuity

~ Hairstylist and Makeup Artist (Expected) - 15-25%

~ Delivery and Setup Staff (Expected) - $5-10 per person

~ Officiant (Expected) - $50-100 to the officiant; $100-500 donation to the church

If your officiant is affiliated with a church or synagogue, you're often expected to make a donation to that institution. If you're a member, you'll probably want to give a larger amount than if you're not. However, if you're getting married there and they're charging you to use the space, feel free to give a smaller amount. Tipping the officiant, both nondenominational and denominational, is also appreciated.

~ Off-Premise Caterer (Expected) - 15-20% of bill or $50-100 per chef and $20-50 per server

~ Reception Management (Expected) - 15-20% or $200-300

This group includes the on-site coordinator, maître d' and banquet manager. A service charge (typically 2 percent) is almost always built in to the food and drink fee, so check your contract. If the gratuity is not included, tip as noted above. (Only applicable for on-premise catering)

~ Servers and Bar Staff (Expected) - 10-20% of food or beverage bill to split among the bar or wait staff

If the service fee is included, consider doling out extra only if the service was exceptional. If it's not included, ask ahead of time how many attendants will be working your wedding and calculate on a per person basis. (Only applicable for on-premise catering)

~ Misc Staff (Expected) - $1 per guest for coatroom and $1 per car for parking attendants and $50 to $100 for bathroom attendants.

~ Transportation (Expected) - 15-20% of total bill

Optional Gratuity

~ Florist (Optional) - 10-15% of the bill

~ Ceremony Musicians (Optional) - $15-20 per musician

~ Photographer and Videographer (Optional) - $50-200 per vendor

If the photographer or videographer actually shooting your wedding doesn't own the company, consider tipping each person (or give a certain amount with a thank-you note to disperse to staff).

~ Reception Band or DJ (Optional) - $20-25 per musician or $50-$150 for DJs

~ Wedding Planner (Optional) - 10-20% up to $500

Wedding planners won't likely expect anything, but if yours did a great job, you can always offer a token of appreciation. (Note: Nonmonetary hand written or video thank-yous can go a long way too.)

~ Photo booth (Optional) - $20-$50
